How HELEN: The Coronation was rendered

A 69-minute film, scripted end to end on one Linux box: the archive ranking, the narration, the score, the grade and the render.

The Coronation chapter card: All rise, The Coronation, Her Majesty will now be crowned

This page is the build sheet for HELEN: The Coronation. The film runs 69:00 and was assembled, scored, narrated, graded and rendered on one Linux box, builder (Ubuntu 24.04, 12 cores), the same machine that runs Frigate and Home Assistant for the cameras. The cut was assembled by scripts rather than in a timeline editor, and every step left a report behind.

1. The archive: 751 broadcasts, ranked

The raw material is the channel itself. A script pulled every upload through the YouTube Data and Analytics APIs: 751 videos (654 public), 615 of them Shorts. Each was ranked by average view percentage, the share of the clip people actually watched, so the film is built from the moments viewers already chose. The top 260 clips, 86 minutes of footage, were downloaded as the shortlist.

The final cut uses 113 shots: 104 from the archive, 5 re-cut from Frigate’s continuous recordings, and 4 raw clips of Helen on the playroom “throne” for the coronation chapter. Because every Short started life as a Frigate event, the film is, shot for shot, the same cameras documented under Frigate and Cameras.

2. Structure: 13 segments, timed to the second

The plan the render had to hit
SegmentLengthMusic cue
Cold open1:30Coronation theme
I–III (Foundling, Four Courts, Her Majesty Dines)5:00 · 6:30 · 7:00Court underscore
IV. The Royal Fountain7:00Fountain nocturne
V. Enemies of the Crown7:30Enemies
Intermission1:30Intermission
VI. The Court Does Not Recognise This Holiday7:00Court underscore
VII. The Kingdom7:00Kingdom
VIII. The Haunted Season6:30Haunted
IX. The Missing Seal6:10Missing seal

Outro2:00Coronation theme (reprise)

Every segment rendered to exactly its scripted length (4,140 seconds in total), which is what lets the chapter timestamps on YouTube line up without anyone scrubbing through the master.

3. Narration: a local voice, 440 lines

The narrator is Kokoro, an open text-to-speech model run locally on builder, using its British “George” voice at 0.9× speed. The script is 440 lines and 3,153 words, 21½ minutes of speech across 69 minutes of picture. Each line is rendered to its own file named after the second it lands on, so one line can be fixed and re-rendered without touching the rest. The full track is loudness-normalised to −20 LUFS.

The voice is deliberately a nature-documentary pastiche: a solemn British narrator describing a cat eating breakfast as a matter of state.

4. Music: nine themes, two takes each

The score is 17 tracks generated with Suno: nine themes (coronation theme, fanfare, court underscore, fountain nocturne, enemies, intermission, kingdom, haunted, missing seal), most in an A and a B take so long chapters can alternate instead of looping one file. Each segment is assigned one cue and loops it to length under the narration.

5. The look: a LUT, grain, bars and title cards

Cat-cam footage is flat, blue-tinted and sharp in the wrong places. A custom 3D colour lookup table (coronation.cube) warms it toward candlelight, then film grain and letterbox bars push it from “security camera” to “documentary”.

Every title card, chapter card, lower third and the “Realm in Numbers” data card is drawn in Python and rendered to video, so a typo is a one-line fix and a re-render, not a design file. Lower thirds rename the cameras as rooms of a palace: Food Bowl Court, Royal Fountain, Treat Chancery, Bed Chamber, Scratch Chamber.

6. The only AI footage: the crowning

Four shots in the final chapter are AI video, generated with the Hailuo 03 model (through Leonardo) from Helen’s real photos: the approach down a red carpet, the crown, a wide shot of the throne room, and a close portrait. They are the only frames in the film that did not come from a camera, and the film says so in its description.

7. Render and delivery

Each segment renders on its own with ffmpeg (libx264, the LUT applied with lut3d), then the 13 segments are concatenated and the narration and music are mixed under them. The master is 1920×1080 at 20 frames a second, about 4.2 Mbit/s video with 195 kbit/s AAC audio: 2.27 GB for 69 minutes.

The master goes two places: up to YouTube through the Data API as a scheduled release, with chapters and three thumbnail variants (A “The Coronation”, B “A Stray Became Queen”, C “Her Majesty”), and into the household Plex library, where it plays at full quality on the TV.
